“I AM ENLISTING YOU TO BE A LEADER IN CHANGE… PLEASE THINK ON ACCOUNT FOR NONSPEAKERS THAT’S ALL I ASK.”

Landen was an autistic nonspeaking poet who used a pencil and a letterboard to share his brilliant mind with the world. Through spelling, he found freedom, purpose, and connection. His writing revealed what so many never saw: the depth of his compassion, his fierce advocacy, and his unwavering belief that unity and understanding can change everything.
Landen’s words were a call to action. He challenged us to look beyond assumptions, to build schools where every nonspeaker is valued, and to create a world where differences are not hidden but celebrated.

Landen dreamed of making Michigan a place where more nonspeakers could find their voices. He envisioned a future where no one would be left without a way to communicate, where community and belonging would be for everyone.
His plea was simple and powerful: “Don’t give up on this.”
Today, we honor Landen not only as a poet, but as a leader whose words will continue to inspire change. May we carry his vision forward with courage and love.
Landen wished to be known in the very awesome world of spelling.
Now, and always, he will be.
“Fight is in you. Equality matters. Don’t give up on this.”
